Catherine Ford was born Bloomsbury in London. Because her father's departure the family of Ford, they were looked after by her mother, grandmother as well as godparents. She suffered from an anxiety disorder caused by words as a young teenager. Ford was attracted to acting in her teens, and enrolled in the National Youth Theatre. The school she was accepted to was Sylvia Young Theatre School. However, after a short period of weeks, she realized this school wasn't suitable for her. Ford decided to apply instead at the Central School of Speech and Drama and was eventually offered the position she wanted on her third try. One of her classmates was Shaun Dingwall, who would play a part as Pete Tyler in Doctor Who. Ford's debut on TV was a 1991 episode Surgical Spirit. By the when she finished her studies, Ford already went by "Catherine Tate". Tate made appearances on television during the Nineties in shows like The Bill and Men Behaving Badly. Tate would also frequently work in theatre and eventually joined in the Royal Shakespeare Company during its season between 2000 and 2001. Tate became famous for her stand-up comedies, which were added to Tate's repertoire in 1996.
